Birthday Brownies: Red Wine and Nutella Brownies

Who doesn’t like a batch of brownies? This semi-homemade recipe is one of my favorites to make for myself and for when I go to parties. The red wine came as an idea from a chocolate red wine tour, where the guide suggested using vino in lieu of water, a genius suggestion I have done ever since. Bascially, follow the instructions on the box. I started adding nutella just to give box brownies a bit of an edge. The result is a chewy, moist and decadent dessert. Enjoy!

Ingredients

  • One box mix (my favorite to use is Ghiradelli or Duncan Hines)

  • 75 ml - 1/3 cup vegetable oil (don’t use olive, it does not come out well)

  • 75 ml - 1/3 cup red wine (just not lambrusco, too much!)

  • 1 egg (or two if the mix asks for it)

  • 4 heaping Tablespoons Nutella

Directions

Preheat the oven to 325 F/ 165C. Prepare a square baking dish*8”x8”/165cm x 165 cm, metal or glass will work. If using glass, I like to line with parchement paper. If using metal, I use a touch of oil to grease the pan.

In a bowl add the brownie mix. In a separate bowl, mix the oil, red wine, egg and two Tablespoons of Nutella until smooth. Combine and place the batter in the pan and spread evenly. With the remaining two tablespoons of Nutella run lines across the top then run a knife to make a pretty pattern. You can also just drizzle haphazardly. You do you.

Bake for 35-45 minutes, ovens vary. Check the brownies at 35 minutes with a toothpick/dry pasta stick. This should come out clean, you don’t want it raw! Allow the brownies to cool before cutting or its a hot mess. I use a pizza cutter and it works like a charm. Enjoy!
